PETER BARÉNYI: sound installation, armchair, headphones, CD player, 2005

The installation called Peter Barényi is based on the sound and consists of an armchair with headphones where spectators can sit in. When the spectator puts the headphones on, the modified autogenic recording of the German psychiatrist I. H. Schulza starts to affect the spectator. The autogenic training is a relaxation technique used for reducing stress through mental exercises in order to produce physical relaxation and respond to certain stimuli.
The author used this technique to “teach” the gallery spectators his name.
This work belongs to the author’s early installations where he “works with a spectator who becomes not only the object of the representation but also the object of the author’s manipulation”.

Inštalácia postavená na zvuku, s názvom Peter Barényi, predstavuje pohodlné kreslo so slúchadlami, do ktorého si divák môže sadnúť. Po nasadení slúchadiel na neho začne pôsobiť pozmenená autogénna nahrávka nemeckého doktora a psychológa I. H. Schulza. Autogénny tréning sa používa na vyvolanie pocitu uvoľnenia a sústredenia sa na podnety, ktoré v poslucháčovi majú vyvolať isté reakcie. Umelec túto techniku využil na to, aby návštevníkov galérie "naučil" svoje meno.
Dielo patrí k raným inštaláciám zaoberajúcim sa "prácou s divákom, ktorý sa stáva nielen predmetom zobrazenia, ale aj objektom autorovej manipulácie".
